Who Owns TelOne Zimbabwe?

Who owns TelOne Zimbabwe? TelOne Zimbabwe is 100% owned by the government of Zimbabwe, and it’s run by the Ministry of Information Technology and Courier services. The leadership of TelOne is made up of a board of directors that are appointed by the ministry.

How old is TelOne?

The first postal service was organized by the British South Africa Company(BSAC) in the year 1892. It was a self-governing entity under the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.

When Zimbabwe got independence in 1980, the Zimbabwe Postal Services Amendment Act was formulated and it led to the establishment of the Postal and Telecommunications Act to create the Post and Telecommunications Corporation of Zimbabwe (PTC) which focused on postal and telecommunication services.

In 2000 PTC broke into three different companies whose services were commercialized. These were TelOne, a fixed telecommunications provider, NetOne, a mobile network for cellular networks and Zimpost, a postal services company. All three were regulated by the Zimbabwe Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe.

How Big is TelOne?

The Information and Communication Technology industry of Zimbabwe is significantly backed up by TelOne. A large number of service providers in Zimbabwe fully rely on TelOne to service their customers.

Through a project called National Broadband, TelOne expanded its backbone fibre footprint and the cost was pegged at US$98 million in 2017. TelOne owns optical fibre networks, radio network systems and satellite bases in different parts of Zimbabwe.

TelOne operates as an IAP(Internet Access Provider) and ISP(Internet Service Provider). As an IAP it caters for mobile and data operators. As an ISP it retails and wholesales internet access and that is part of the reason it is one of Zimbabwe’s largest internet service providers.

TelOne is also offering Satellite Broadband Solutions via their satellite infrastructure. They make use of Ka band and C band VSAT which stands for a very small aperture terminal.

TelOne is the sole provider of fixed landline services. Needless to say they have the largest fixed landline network in Zimbabwe. The network distribution is so wide and it reaches almost every corner of Zimbabwe catering for both individuals and businesses.

TelOne operates a factory in Msasa that produces various types of hardware and equipment which support telecommunication such as microwave towers. They also repair telecommunications equipment such as telephone handsets and power supplies.
