Who owns the internet in Zimbabwe?
No single company owns the internet in Zimbabwe. However, there are major players in that space who are responsible for the coverage we have in Zimbabwe. TelOne and Powertel are government-owned ISPs covering many parts of Zimbabwe.
Most smaller ISPs buy bandwidth from TelOne since it has most of the infrastructure. When it comes to private enterprises we have Liquid Telecom. Liquid has the largest network of internet service infrastructure in Zimbabwe.
They actually go beyond Zimbabwe into South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Zambia, Kenya, DRC, Rwanda and Uganda. They basically operate the largest fibre network in Africa. The other major players from the private sector are Dandemutande and Africom.
Where does Zimbabwe get the internet?
As already mentioned, Liquid, which is owned by Econet Wireless, operates the largest fibre network across Africa. They are responsible for bringing the internet into landlocked countries from the main undersea cable.
They continue up to the present day improving and spreading their cover to reach even the most remote areas. Although big strides have been made in fibre coverage, there still remain other areas without cover. For this reason, a big part of Zimbabwe’s population uses mobile broadband via their cell phones.
In the case of work purposes, there is an option for LTE which just requires a MiFi router with a Sim card. You can find out with your ISP to see the packages that they offer and see what suits your needs.
